The follow ups to the Sony Xperia 1 and Xperia 10 are due to be announced later today via an online stream – but serial Max Weinbach of XDA Developers had found leaked promo materials of the two devices, including their specs.

Sony have opted for an unnecessarily convoluted naming scheme for the phones – the new devices will be called the Xperia 1 II (or Mark II) and the Xperia 10 II (or Mark II).

The flagship Xperia 1 II will have blocky look but with a triple-lens bumper at the back. It has a 6.5-inch 4K display that has what Sony calls Motion Blur Reduction, that works like 90Hz refresh rate, but isn’t. Maybe Sony will clarify during the launch later.

For imaging, its got a three 12MP lenses along with a ToF lens. The selfie camera is a modest 8MP shooter. With the likes of Samsung gunning for a higher resolution camera setup all around, you’d think Sony would up their game in this department to catch up – perhaps the company is confident enough in its photography software then.

Under the hood, we get a Snapdragon 865 chipset with 5G support (Sub6), 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. It’s powered with a 4,000mAh battery with wireless charging support, and comes with a headphone jack.

It’s looking like an overall standard 2020 flagship with emphasis on display, and considering Sony devices cost a kidney in Malaysia, the Samsung S20 line-up may be more appealing to us.

The Xperia 10 II is a midrange device with a similar aesthetic. It’s a 6-inch smartphone with a FHD+ OLED panel. For imaging, you get a 12MP main along with a couple of 8MP lenses. The front camera is also 8MP.

Under the hood is a Snapdragon 665 chipset, so no 5G support. You get 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. It’s got a 3,600mAh battery too. Specs-wise at least, the Xperia 10 is not looking too appealing, again with the Samsung Galaxy A71 an A51 offering much more for possibly around the same price.

We’ll see what Sony says later during their live stream, perhaps new software features could win over some of us.
