After Xiaomi, Huawei is the next company to unveil its 5G smartphone, and it isn’t just a mere upgrade of its existing handset, but an entirely new foldable device known as the Mate X, with a couple of firsts to boast and boo competitors.

Sporting a Falcon Wing Mechanical hinge design, the Mate X has a 6.6-inch dual display that can transform into an 8-inch tablet when unfolded, powered by the Kirin 980 SoC mated to 8GB RAM and 512GB of storage, it is the first device to feature the 7nm Balong 5000 multi-mode 5G modem chipset that is capable of delivering 4.6Gbps download speeds.

The Mate X also has a respectable 4500mAh powering all that hungry juice and it is the first Huawei device to sport Huawei’s 55W SuperCharge, which can charge the phone from 0% to 85% in a mere 30 minutes. In terms of cameras, the Mate X carries over the Mate 20 Pro’s Leica triple camera setup, the cameras are also used as the phone’s selfie camera, which is pretty convenient.

This is definitely way more impressive than the Royole Flexpai that we have seen in CES this year, and unlike the former, it looks like Huawei is prepared to sell this in its official stores in mid-2019 for the price of €2290 (RM10,584), matching its closest rival, the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

Whether you are ready to splurge that money on a foldable phone, there is bound to be some compatibility issues with apps when it goes on sale, so let’s hope app developers are ready to embrace it.
