Microsoft’s HoloLens is one of the more interesting VR/AR headsets available in the market, although the price point for the product isn’t exactly what one would consider affordable. For those of you who are looking forwards to the next iteration of the HoloLens which would hopefully make it a better product while lowering the barrier of entry, you’re going to have a really long wait ahead of you as Microsoft’s next version of the HoloLens isn’t due until 2019.
According to a report by Thurrott, it appears that Microsoft has scrapped plans for a second generation HoloLens, opting instead to accelerate the development of the third generation headset instead. The logic behind this move is rather straightforward: as Microsoft has a huge space to work with in the augmented reality market right now, the company feels no need to rush devices out to compete for market share. Because of this huge buffer that Microsoft has, the company is looking to speed up development of the 3rd-gen HoloLens that will come with new technologies instead of developing a more affordable version of the current HoloLens.
While the new HoloLens isn’t expected to arrive until 2019, Microsoft will still be working on the first gen HoloLens via updated software.
