Multitaskers who like to do their work while watching a movie or video take note, Microsoft will be rolling out a picture-in-picture mode for Windows 10 in the near future.
Currently available in the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 15031, which is the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview build, the Compact Overlay window feature lets you run a program in a small window that can be pinned above other applications. On the developers side of things, the Compact Overlay feature “works just like normal windows in all other ways” according to Microsoft description, meaning that it shouldn’t be too hard to implement it on other software.
For the Insider Preview, upcoming updates for Microsoft’s own Movies & TV app as well as the Skype Preview app will allow both these applications to support Compact Overlays. Once the feature goes live, we fully expect this feature to be implemented in various other applications.
