Unfortunate incidents can happen anywhere and anytime, and to think about getting yourselves to the nearest police station to make a report and require to wait for long queues, that could be a torture to our patience. Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan has told Parliament today that Malaysians can soon lodge a police report via their smartphones and computers, a system is reportedly in development to enable reports to be made as easy as updating one’s status on social media, this is rather similar to what we have reported last week, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has partnered with Facebook on implementing the National Urgent Response (NUR) system to combat child disapperance and kidnapping issues.
The system is expected to link to PDRM’s system and there has been no mention of which social media will be supported, as the police and Attorney-General’s Chambers are still in disccusion to iron out legal issues before the system goes live, Nur Jazlan mentioned that the key challenge on this would be verifying the identity of the complainant, which they will need to ensure a digital signature is legally accepted. In the past two years, an app called MyDistress was developed in collaboration with PDRM to allow users to send a red alert to the police whenever they are troubled, the app is now reportedly defunct.
