Scammers are everywhere and in most cases, it comes in the form of calls by random strangers with information about you. Recently, a user by the name of “EeQuin Chow” has posted a story about her experience with call scammers on Facebook and has warned others that it could be a new tactic used by scammers to target innocent citizens.

EeQuin start off her post by mentioning her brother was called by a man who said that he works for Tenaga Nasional Berhad (BHD). Thinking that the call was legit, her brother was told that the address of their family business has not been paying their bills for 3 months which has accumulated to a sum of more than RM9,000 in debt. After that, the man had also mentioned that TNB would be sending their staffs over to their shop to cut off their electricity. Because EeQuin and her family runs a 24 hour business, they could not afford to have an electricity cut as it would disrupt their business.

After her brother has informed her about the incident, EeQuin was not convinced as she knows that she pays her bills every month. Convinced that it could be a scam, she immediately rushed home and went online to check her electricity bill statement. Unsurprisingly, all of the bills are up to date and has already been paid fully. But just to make sure, she has even made a call to TNB to confirm her bill statements, and was told that they do not have any outstanding bills, in which she then informs TNB about the incident.

After confirming that it is a scam call, EeQuin informed her brother and they decided to give the man a call back to see what more he has under his sleeves. According to EeQuin, the man offered a deal with her brother by offering a discount of RM6,000 to which they would only need to pay an amount of RM3,000 to clear off their “debts”, and insist on paying it through an account that is not directed to TNB.

EeQuin ends her post by sharing her thoughts on the situation and techniques on how others could detect a scammer. In this case, fellow Malaysians are encouraged to get their bills in check and always stay calm when receiving scam calls.
