2016 is the year of Android Nougat. As much as fans will want Google’s latest software on their handsets, Android fragmentation and support over the sea of manufacturers makes it difficult for all Android devices to be updated in a short period of time, the total opposite of Apple’s iOS stories. With the year coming to a close, based on Google Play Store access data, most Android handsets out there are still running on Android Lollipop.
Based on the latest Android distribution data, a significant 34 percent of devices still operate Lollipop, which was launched two years ago. Thankfully, Marshmallow takes the second place at 26.3 percent, followed by the even more ancient Kit Kat at 24 percent, which still accounts for nearly a quarter of all Android devices. Jellybean takes up 12.8 percent of the whole share. Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich account for 1.2 percent each, followed by the latest Nougat with 0.4 percent and dinosaur age Froyo with 0.1 percent.
We should see a boost in percentage for Android Nougat since most manufacturers have been teasing Nougat updates on their respective handsets to rollout by the end of this year or by the first quarter of 2017.
