LG Velvet is a new series which will focus on a minimalist design language

Remember that upcoming LG smartphone with the ‘raindrop’ camera design that we wrote about recently? Well, that phone now has a name – the LG Velvet will be the Korean giants’ latest series and it’ll likely replace the ‘G’ series when it comes out.

According to reports, the LG Velvet will be a mid-range entry, but we’d like to think that if it’s replacing the G-series, then it’ll likely have options in the premium arena too.

What makes the LG Velvet interesting are two design features – the most apparent one is the aforementioned raindrop camera module where three to four lenses are placed vertically in order of decreasing sizes, each lens resembling a drop of water. LG wanted to veer away from the trend of square camera modules, so this new design tackles the issue with no bumps and each lens flush with the back panel.

With this, the next design change makes this raindrop aesthetic even more impressive – the display and back panel will apparently curve symmetrically with each other, and will meet at the sides of the phone without a thick frame to hold them together. Meaning, this phone could be very thin, which also leads us to wonder how they’re going to fit a high-res camera in the LG Velvet.

Regardless, LG’s market dominance is almost nil in comparison with its biggest rivals – especially here in Malaysia. With this new series, we’re hoping the company can find some footing in Malaysia again as we desperately need more options, boasting interesting and unique designs.
