Another vehicle manufacturer is trying to enter the smartphone market and this time it is Land Rover with the introduction of the Explore. Being a company that produces strong cars that can really take a beating, the Explore is no different as it comes with IP68 dust and water resistant and can withstand drops to almost six feet with a factory-fitted screen protector.
Land Rover has claimed that the phone can be used with gloves or wet fingers and it will still function when submerged in fresh or salt water. Other than that, it is running on Android Nougat and Land Rover has added their own software which will give you quick access to the SOS light, sensor data and information on wind, tide, company and weather.
It can even produce information on off-road topographical maps from ViewRanger. The Explore comes equipped with a 5-inch FHD display, 16MP rear camera, Helio X27 processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. Powering the device is a 4,000mAh battery that Land Rover has claimed, can last for two days of regular use.
Similar to the Motorola Z-series, it has pins on the back for you to attach different Packs as they are calling it. The Explore comes with an Adventure Pack which gives you a 3,600mAh battery and a 22mm ceramic patch GPS antenna which will disable the phone’s GPS antenna and use the Pack’s antenna.
Other than that, there are also packs available separately like the Bike Pack which allows you to mount the phone on your bike, and a Battery Pack which adds a 4,370mAh battery. Both the Adventure and Battery Pack are IP68 certified and can withstand up to six-foot drops. The Explore will cost $800 which is not really affordable seeing the specs it brings, but if you are a 4×4 junky, then the Explore is a phone that you might want to invest in.
