iPhones may need to include removable batteries, according to leaked EU documents

Most phones now come with non-removable batteries but there have been leaked documents recently that revealed that the European Commission might try to bring back removable batteries.

These leaked documents are private, so it hasn’t been fully confirmed that EU will indeed proceed with the plan, but rumour has it the proposal will be revealed next month. Previously, EU has also proposed to standardise charging ports in mobile device which could help reduce electronic waste.

Apple was against the ruling as it would mean discarding all the Lightning devices, and we think Apple will reject the new proposal too since it’ll affect the phone’s design. Currently, the batteries are glued into the chassis, resulting in a smaller form factor that could help brands produce slimmer phones.

While removable batteries will make it easier for users to change new batteries when there are issues, it also make it easier for them to attempt to repair the phones themselves, leading to unnecessary damages.
