Finally! Some proof that Google still pays attention to consumers from developing countries. This year, Google went straight into the premium spectrum with its Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones, both carrying pretty hefty price tags. This resulted in many speculating that Google will not be focusing on its Android One initiative anymore, but this new Android device has proved critics wrong yet again.
The Android One initiative, mainly aimed towards consumers from developing countries to provide them the stock Android experience in more affordable means. The last known Android One device turned out to be Japan’s first – the Sharp Aquos 507H which ran on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Now we have a brand new Android One device from Turkish manufacturer General One, and it is the first to run the latest Nougat OS.
GM 5 is the name of this new handset. The mid ranger sports a 5-inch 720p display on the front with Gorilla Glass 4 protection. Underneath the hood is a Snapdragon 410 processor, 2GB of RAM with 16GB of expandable storage. The GM 5 is available in both single SIM and dual SIM variants, both with micro SD card slots. The phone features a 13MP rear camera with dual LED flash, coupled with a 5MP selfie shooter on the front.
In order to maintain its affordability, the GM 5 appears to not have a fingerprint sensor. It packs a 2,500mAh battery which should be fairly sufficient for a phone of its stature. As mentioned earlier, the GM 5 runs on Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. Its price tag is expected to remain below the $100 (RM420.00) mark. What do you think?
