Many have complained about Huawei’s own Emotion UI as being too similar to the iPhone’s. This may no longer be the case as the upcoming EMUI 5.0 is said to sport a major re-design that would give it a more stock Android look than the current iPhone-ish design.
Scheduled for launch in the third quarter of 2016, EMUI 5.0 is rumoured to bring an entirely new UI which resembles stock Android. In general, Huawei is aiming to simplify its UI with EMUI 5.0, which is a radical departure in design when compared to the previous versions of EMUI that opted for a more advanced and complex menu structures and navigation schemes.
While EMUI 5.0 is looking at simplicity, Li Changzhu, head of Huawei’s mobile division, has stated that this change would not come at the expense of functionality or customisability, both of which play an important role in EMUI.
This redesign of EMUI isn’t exactly surprising news. Last year, Huawei hired ex-Apple designer Abigail Brody to help them retool their UI. The upcoming EMUI 5.0 would be the first test to see if Huawei’s gambit to re-design its UI would allow it to stand outside of the iPhone’s shadow.
