Yesterday Huawei invited the Malaysian tech media to take a first look at the future potential capabilities of the Kirin 980 processor that will be debuted with the Huawei Mate 20 devices. They mainly focused on two elements during the presentation, human body tracking and gaming capabilities.

During the presentation, they gave us the chance to try out the human tracking capabilities using their test board that was equipped with a single camera lens as well as the Kirin 980. The tracking uses a combination of the camera as well as the processor’s dual-NPU cores to effectively track and predict the movement of the subject to keep the tracking smooth.

The software is capable of tracking your joints and it similar to the Microsoft Kinect camera expect it has more tracking points. When asked what could a consumer use this feature for, they said that this would definitely help when it comes to taking videos as the camera will be able to keep the subject in focus as well as other VR and AR applications. They also confirmed that they will release the SDK to developers when it is fully completed.

Next was the gaming demo which they showed of gameplay of NBA2K running on 60 frames-per-second and it has managed to maintain a stable 60 fps with an average of 59.5 fps overall.

The company has mentioned that this is thanks to the combination of all cores on the Kirin 980 working together to stabilize the frames of the game as well as keep it consistent. They also mentioned that the upcoming phones that will be equipped with the Kirin 980 will support GPU Turbo to further stabilize and smoothen gameplay.

When asked about how these features will be implemented into the upcoming Mate 20 phone, they had no comment on the subject but did tell us that we will be wowed with the features and performance of the Mate 20 phones.
