Huawei has begun joining the big boys in the smartphone industry lately. Late last year, the company announced its plan to overtake Apple in smartphone shipments to claim second placing worldwide in two years. As overly ambitious as that may sound, it turns out that it is now possible, in less than a year.

Digi Times has reported the likelihood of Huawei being the second largest smartphone vendor in Q3 this year, overtaking Apple and sitting right behind South Korean giant Samsung. Q2 results in smartphone sales show Huawei shipping a total of 38.5 million units, a mere 2.5 million units lesser than Apple’s 41 million. If Huawei’s growth persists throughout the third quarter, the company will likely clinch second place as Apple launches the iPhone 8 series.

Huawei nearly tripled the sales of Apple’s on home soil China, recording 23.5 million smartphone shipments over the last quarter, while Apple declined to a measly 8 million. Huawei is expected to gain even more ground towards the end of the year with the launch of the Huawei Mate 10, replacing the hot selling Mate 9.

It looks like Apple and Samsung aren’t the only ones dominating the smartphone market with the rise of competitive Chinese smartphone makers such as Huawei, Xiaomi and OPPO.
