During the inauguration of the Huawei Malaysia Ecosystem Conference 2019, the Chinese company introduced the Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) operating system ecosystem. As Google Mobile Services will no longer be supported in future Huawei devices, HMS will be the ecosystem that gives life to the Mate 30 series smartphones as well as upcoming products.
The HMS core systems is built to be as familiar as possible for both users and developers – it’s equipped with necessary tool kits for messaging, notifications, in-app purchasing and more. Huawei claims that there are over 43,000 apps available in the HMS ecosystem as of July.
With this, Huawei is launching HMS developer support in Malaysia, encouraging local camps to build for the HMS ecosystem. The Huawei Shining Star Program is a billion-dollar effort from the company that aims to support local developers.
Also, the HMS Integration Challenge is being held until 31 December that rewards participants grants worth up to RM500,000 for apps based on the Huawei SDK, and uploading it onto the system. Those who complete the challenge by the end of the month will get the full RM500,000 sum while those who complete it next month will get RM300,000, and those finishing it by the end of the eayr will get RM100,000. It seems like a short timeframe, but Huawei says that the HMS ecosystem is easy enough to use that an SDK utilizing it will only requires “3-man-days” to get into the Huawei App Gallery.
It looks like Huawei is here to stay – with the help of local developers, it looks like HMS could be an alternate way forward for Huawei users moving forward.
