Six months after it was first reported that HMD Global has decided to acquire the Nokia brand, the deal between HMD Global, FIH Mobile and Microsoft has finally been completed. With the documents signed and sealed, HMD Global has reached a 10-year agreement that will allow the company to manufacturer and sell Nokia-branded devices.

HMD Global has since launched a new website that introduces itself as “the home of Nokia phones”. More importantly, HMD Global has announced that the company intends to launch its first Nokia smartphone in the first half of 2017. While little details were given as to the nature of the smartphone, HMD did confirm that it will be running on the Android OS.

Whether or not the Nokia brand can bounce back from its highly unsuccessful partnership with Microsoft remains to be seen. For now though, the decision to use Android instead of Windows mobile means that the upcoming Nokia smartphone may appeal to a wider audience rather than just the Windows die-hards.
