While it is impressive that the iPhone XR has the portrait mode and can capture good portrait pictures despite the lack of dual camera, it is only possible to do so when humans are the subjects. This means that the camera will not be able to detect non-humans as the subjects such as animal, plants and objects.

However, an app called Halide can overcome this problem, though it’ll cost you RM 24.90 to purchase the app. It has a depth aware feature that enable portrait modes for non-humans, which currently works on pets. It is still on early stages hence it can be a little inconsistent especially when the foreground and background do not have enough distance. Still, it is sufficient for those who really want to take portrait mode of their pets.

The Halide app also has a new update which is called Smart RAW for iPhone Xs, which is said to be able to get the best RAW shots out of the iPhone Xs, providing more details to the images such as better highlights and lower noise.

So now we have three options; to only use the portrait mode for humans as subjects, to purchase the Halide app and be able to use the portrait mode for more than just humans, or to pray and patiently wait for Apple to better the portrait mode through its iOS update.
