Tethering your devices to a single hotspot may soon be a lot easier for Android users as Google has rolled out a feature called Instant Tethering.
Currently only available on Pixel and Nexus devices which are running Android Nougat 7.1.1, Instant Tethering is part of Google Play Services 10.2. With this feature enabled, Instant Tethering would link up devices that are associated with your Google account. In the event that one of the linked devices loses connection to the internet, Instant Tethering would automatically ask if you would like to tether said device to another device that has an internet connection. If you reply in the affirmative, both devices will be tethered to each other automatically. Besides tethering two devices together, the feature will also display the battery level of all other linked devices.
As mentioned earlier, this feature is currently limited to Nexus and Pixel devices. In addition to that, only phones like the Pixel and Pixel XL can be used as hotspots. Tablets such as the Nexus 9 and the Pixel C will only be able to connect to the hotspots and are unable to become hotspots of their own. Additionally, the feature’s availability is also reliant on whether or not your phone carrier allows data tethering in the first place.
