Facebook is developing Threads — Instagram’s standalone companion messaging app

Looks like Instagram is getting a standalone companion messaging app soon and it’ll be called Threads. Threads to Instagram will be like Messenger to Facebook but focuses on Instagram’s “close friends” list.

According to The Verge’s report, Threads will let its users “automatically share their location, speed and battery life with friends.” In addition, users will still be able to use Instagram’s creative tools to send texts, photos and videos. They can also view Instagram stories of those in their “close friends” list without needing to go back to Instagram.

This companion messaging app is in actual fact very similar to Snapchat. Honestly, I believe Snapchat is preferred by those who’d like to share their life with just a close group of friends instead of everyone on the platform and that’s what Facebook is trying to achieve with Threads. Threads will also offer status updates so your friends can keep up with what you’re up to.

Previously, Facebook tried to create a standalone app called Instagram Direct, but that did not work out well, leading to its demise.
