According to The Verge, Facebook, Inc CEO Mark Zuckerberg has instructed his team to “make serving young adults their north star”.

That is to say that this demographic represents the largest portion of Facebook and Instagram’s users. The social media brand is even willing to risk a slower growing user base among older folk in order to cater to young adults.

Zuckerberg says that he expects the changes to take years, and The Verge reckons that the earliest signs of change could be seen on Instagram. There is expected to be significant changes where the content posted on the platform will consist of more videos and Reels.

This paradigm shift was partly inspired by the emergence of TikTok, a platform which Zuckerberg calls “one of the most effective competitors” he’s ever faced.
