Face ID won’t work on non-genuine iPhone 13 displays

Cracked your iPhone 13 screen? Make sure you get it replaced/repaired by an Apple-authorised repair store, or your Face ID may be rendered useless.

If you get your iPhone 13 fixed at third-party repair shops that aren’t verified by Apple via its Independent Repair Program, your iPhone will detect your new display as a non-genuine screen.

What happens to Face ID if it’s a non-genuine screen?

According to a YouTube video by Phone Repair Guru, the iPhone 13’s screen components (microphone, proximity sensor and ambient light sensor) doesn’t affect Face ID.

This means the TrueDepth system is in the iPhone itself, not the screen. Despite that, switching to a third-party screen will lead to Face ID failure — even if you reset, it wouldn’t allow you to re-scan your face.

Since the hardware is not the problem, the current assumption is that this is an iOS 15 bug; Apple may just roll out an update to fix this issue.

But, it’s also possible that this is a move from Apple to ensure users get their devices only by certified Apple technicians.
