Cyanogen once had great ambitions of being the next big mobile platform in the market. However, the year hasn’t been kind to them, as the company was hit with layoffs as well as rumours of a pivot to apps instead. Today, Cyanogen has announced its next big project, and it looks like the it would be tackling modular OS next.
In a statement issued by the Cyanogen, the company announces that it will be working on a new Cyanogen Modular OS program. According to the statement, the Cyanogen Modular OS program would introduce “intelligent, customizable Android smartphones using different parts of the Cyanogen OS via dynamic modules and MODs, with the ROM of their hoice, whether stock Android or their own variant.”
Previously, Cyanogen has worked on modular software via the MOD program. This program allowed partners to tweak deep into the Android ecosystem to create a custom OS. According to Cyanogen’s new CEO Lior Tal, this program required working with the OS’ full stack, making it a laborious and limiting feature. With Cyanogen’s Modular OS program, manufacturers will potentially be able to ship phones that use discrete aspects of the Cyanogen OS. For example, a phone running on stock Android would be able to pull in custom features and apps from the Cyanogen side.
