Synology’s appearance in COMPUTEX this year has once again impressed us with two new DiskStation NAS servers, the DS916+ and DS416play are two new products aimed at highly scalable enterprises and professionals, they are both powered by Intel processors and that means you will have better application compatibility on its DiskStation Manager 6.0 operating system.
One look at the DS916+ easily tells you that this isn’t something made for the average joe, the NAS server is able to handle up to 4 hard drives (expandable to 9 hard drives via e-SATA) and features 2GB and 8GB RAM options, making it a very flexible and future proof product if you have a constantly growing user base, it is also made to handle concurrent connections and virtualization as well. In terms of performance, the DS916+ is powered by an Intel Pentium quad-core CPU and Synology claims an impressive 225MB/s read and 221MB/s write speed, it also has two Gigabit LAN ports, two USB 3.0 ports at the back and one USB 3.0 port at the front.
The DS416play may be just a consumer-centric four bay NAS but it is certainly no slouch when it comes to transfer speeds, powered by an Intel Celeron dual-core processor, the DS416play offers up to 225MB/s read and 186MB/s write speed under RAID 5 configuration in a Windows environment, users will also be happy to know that the NAS server features single channel 4K Ultra HD or triple-channel full HD video transcoding on the fly, hence you can easily view your high quality videos on the NAS with your mobile device through DS Video and the NAS’s built-in Video Station without using your device’s hardware power. Finally, the DS416play has dual Gigabit LAN with a failover support to ensure service continuity in case of a network failure.
Apart from these two hero devices, Synology has also displayed the cute, compact and powerful DS416slim NAS server, the four hot swap drive bays accepts 2.5-inch hard drives and the NAS is powered by a dual-core 1.0GHz CPU, transfer speeds are also decent with over 194MB/s read and 77MB/s write speeds. Synology has not specify a release date, but do keep a look out in your local IT retailers if you are interested in buying one of these NAS servers.
