One of the key gripes that many people have (myself included) with Chrome is its memory consumption. Google’s browser has had a problem with RAM usage ever since it was first released to the public. So it is a rather huge relief to hear that the upcoming Chrome 55 update will see the browser sport an upgraded JavaScript engine which will lead to the browser consuming less memory in the process.
Currently scheduled for a December 6th release, Google states that the JavaScript V8 engine found in Chrome 55 will come with dramatic improvements to the browser’s performance. An internal test that has Google loading up webpages like the New York Times, Reddit and YouTube shows that Chrome 55 utilises 50 percent less RAM on average than Chrome 53.
While the upcoming update will see Chrome being less of a resource hog than it currently is, do not expect a huge jump in performance with Chrome 55. That said, Google has mentioned that they will continue to optimize the browser’s JavaScript engine, allowing those who utilise the browser on lower-end devices with less than 1GB of memory to browse the internet smoothly.
