Remember the Compute Stick that Intel debuted a few years ago? The Compute Card is the successor to it. This little credit card-sized device is meant to be used when your smart devices go obsolete.
Hidden within the card-shaped container is a full Intel computer, complete with a 7th-gen Intel Core processor, RAM, storage, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. The card itself uses what Intel is calling the “USB-C plus extension connector” to provide USB and PCIe data connectivity alongside HDMI and DisplayPort video signals to the device.
As mentioned earlier, the Compute Card is mainly targeted at Internet of Things-capable devices such as smart TVs and smart appliances. As technology marches forward, the components inside these devices may age and eventually become obsolete. With the Compute Card, you’ll be able to slot in this device and immediately upgrade said device, negating the need to go out and purchase a new IoT-ready appliance.
For now, Intel will be working with Dell, HP, Lenovo, Sharp, Seneca, DTx, InFocus, TabletKiosk, and Pasuntech to explore the possibilities of the Compute Card. The card itself is expected to be available by mid-2017.
