Celcom customers can now use Rich Communication Services on Android phones

After announcing its ‘Lightning Fast LTE’ network last week, Celcom has unveiled another update to its network and this time, it specifically benefits Android users as the telco has adopted Google’s Rich Communication Services (RCS), a messaging service that uses Android Messages to replace SMS text with features such as group chats, high resolution photo sharing and read receipts.

Although this may seem pretty unnecessary, given that such messaging features are already long available in WhatsApp and other similar apps, the difference here is that this feature is automatically enabled on the Android Messages app, which is preinstalled by default on some phones and requires minimal setup, a similar example would be iMessage on iPhone, which users can send rich text messages to other iPhone users using their data. Celcom is the first telco to offer RCS in Malaysia, the company has joined international telcos such as Sprint, Rogers, Orange, Deutsche Telekom and Globe Telecom in adopting this technology.

“Celcom is honoured to be the first network provider in Malaysia to work with Google on RCS. We look forward to innovating with Google to deliver new services on the messaging platform in the near future,” quoted Michael Kuehner, CEO of Celcom Axiata Berhad.
