Last week, it was announced that Blizzard’s own FPS-MOBA hybrid Overwatch has hit the seven million players mark. To celebrate the occasion, Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan has posted the short term future of the game in the Battle.net forums.

The biggest priority that Blizzard has right now is to push out the ‘Competitive Play mode.’ As the name implies, this mode consists of ranked matches and will sort players according to skill level. Kaplan has stated that the mode is currently being tested internal and the team at Blizzard are still contemplating if they would want to push this feature out to the Public Test Realm to get feedback from the players. Kaplan also says that Competitive Play will most likely undergo a few season’s worth of iterations before the mode hits the sweet spot, so while Competitive Play will be coming soon, the mode won’t be optimal when it first launches.

Aside from Competitive Play, Blizzard also has plans to introduce new maps and characters. That said, most of the characters and maps are currently in the prototyping stages and will not be made available in-game anytime soon. Other tweaks that the team is working on for Overwatch includes the progression system, the character customization system, and even social feature improvements.
