BlackBerry will be focusing on Android for 2016

BlackBerry CEO John Chen has revealed that the company will be focusing on Android OS for its smartphones this year at CES, putting BB10 on the backburner for the time being.

According to Chen, BlackBerry will be releasing at least one new product in 2016 that will be running Android. The latest phone from BlackBerry, the Priv, is the first BlackBerry phone to use Google’s Android OS.

While the company’s near future will be focused on Android for now, BB10 OS will still be present as the company seeks to gain certification for the OS in the US. That said, should the Android-powered BlackBerry smartphones manage to turn around the company’s declining presence in the market, BB10’s importance may diminish even further. Whatever the case, existing products that uses BB10 will still be available for purchase for the foreseeable future.

BlackBerry has also pegged 2016 as a make-or-break year for the phone business. Chen states that if the company continues to lose money, BlackBerry may consider quitting the market altogether.
