BitTorrent is bringing its peer-to-peer technology to the video streaming market as the folks responsible for one of the biggest torrent client in the world is debuting their own video streaming platform called BitTorrent Live.

Available as a TV, mobile or desktop app, BitTorrent Live is a video streaming service that utilises peer-to-peer technology to deliver livestreams of sports matches, news and other types of programming. As the service relies on peer-to-peer, the video quality of BitTorrent Live will improve as more people tune in. If a large enough audience is viewing a single live video, the crowd will be able to enjoy said video with a sub 10-second latency without the need for an expensive CDN or pre-provisioning.

Once the service goes live, BitTorrent Live will be free to download and will come with free programming that anyone can access. The few channels that will be available on the service will broadcast electro festivals, MMA and boxing, various ball games, current affairs and tech news. For those who would like to broadcast their own material though, you may be disappoint as the service will not be a social streaming app during its release.

BitTorrent Live will be availble for Apple TV on iTunes within the week with iOS, Android and Mac OS X versions coming in June. While it will be free during launch, BitTorrent has stated that a they will be working on either a subscription or a pay-per-view model for the service.
