ARM introduces Cortex-A77 CPU and Mali-G77 GPU for next-gen flagship phones

Last year, ARM announced its Cortex-A76 micro-architecture for premium smartphones. The company has now come out with the next-generation Cortex-A77. Along with Cortex-A77, ARM has also announced its new Mali-G77 GPU based on Valhall GPU architecture.

ARM’s new Cortex-A77 core is claimed to deliver a 20 percent boost in terms of IPC (instructions per clock) performance when compared to the previous generation. In fact, ARM says the Cortex-A77 can deliver performance comparable to mainstream notebooks that are available today. The next-generation Cortex-A77 core can be paired with Cortex-A55 CPUs in a DynamIQ big.LITTLE configuration in both mobiles as well laptops. Thanks to the improved performance, the Cortex-A55 will enable more immersive AAA-gaming, faster app launch times, as well as smoother web-browsing.

The new Mali-G77 GPU is said to be 40 percent faster when it comes to graphics performance compared to the Mali-G76. More impressively, however, the GPU delivers a 60 percent improvement in machine learning performance. Energy efficiency is also improved by an impressive 30 percent. The Mali-G77 is based on ARM’s new Valhall architecture, which succeeds the Bitfrost GPU architecture unveiled in 2016. Some of the key highlights of the new Valhall architecture include a Superscalar engine, simplified scalar ISA, and dynamic instruction scheduling.

Smartphones, tablets, as well as laptops powered by SoCs featuring ARM’s new Cortex-A77 and Mali-G77 are expected to become available next year.
