Not too long ago, you would’ve known that Apple has teamed up with Hong Kong director Peter Chan to release a Chinese New Year short film on YouTube shot on iPhone X, the video has gathered more 2.2 million views and 14K thumbs up at this point of time, it is one of the most successful branded short film that is shot entirely on a smartphone. This time, Apple is about to show off the next short film shot for this festive Hari Raya season, and it has partnered with well known Malaysian director Edmund Yeo to release Setitis Cahaya Di Pagi Raya (A Glimmer of Light on the Dawn of Raya), the short film is set to debut on June 15, 7pm, on Apple Music, you will also be able to view it via Warner Music Malaysia’s YouTube channel and other social media channels.
Similar to Apple’s CNY short 3 Minutes, this Hari Raya short film is filmed entirely on the iPhone X, where director Edmund Yeo takes viewers through the family life of Makcik Rohayah and Kak Ogy, as their house has always been the director’s location choice when it comes to his production work, Edmund tells the unfortunate event of the family where they lost their breadwinner and how Kak Ogy had taken upon the responsibility of providing for the family, while staying positive in life despite living in poverty and on welfare.
By using the iPhone X, it allowed Edmund to capture the people, especially the children in their most genuine moments, as using a huge camera may actually intimidate subjects or make them too self-conscious by a large camera, hence there was no staged acting in the entire film. Setitis Cahaya Di Pagi Raya stars Faizal Tahir and Aziz Harun, who are the two main hosts in the short film talking to Makcik Rohayah and Kak Ogy.
