Apple suspends its Siri grading practice that involved user privacy issues

Apple always highlights how firm they are on user privacy, but just like the recent case with Google Assistant, they also have contractors who have been listening to Siri conversations.

It was recently discovered that Apple’s hired contractors have been listening to accidental recordings that include drug deals, sexual encounters and medical conversations. Contractors are hired to grade Siri’s responses in various ways, for example, whether the request for Siri was intentional or accidental, and whether Siri’s response to the said request is adequate.

Now Apple reports that it will temporarily suspend this practice and include the option for users to not participate in the grading process if they’re against their data being used in the future software update. That being said, Apple did not confirm if the Siri recordings will still be saved in its server even though the practice is suspended.

As of now, Apple doesn’t offer the option for users to opt-out of the grading process. The only way to do it is to disable Siri altogether, but that is a more drastic approach compared to Amazon and Google who let their users opt-out of said practice.
