Apple says MacBook Pro CPU throttling issues a software bug

The latest MacBook Pro has gotten a lot of users excited over its upgraded CPU, however all hopes were almost shattered when YouTuber Dave2D found out that there are serious throttling issues on the top spec Core i9 15-inch MacBook Pro when running video rendering tasks, the results have also proven to be relevant across other tech YouTubers’ experience. Apple has admitted that issue and has claimed that it is something to do with a bug on the current version of macOS High Sierra 10.13.6, which it is missing a ‘digital key’ that impacts the thermal management of the machine.

Therefore, a supplemental update has been issued today to rectify the issue, which customers can immediately download it on the Mac App Store, Apple says that the machines should return to its advertised speed, which the 15-inch MacBook Pro is 70% faster than its predecessor and the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar is 2X faster.

CPU throttling isn’t uncommon on notebooks, especially when manufacturers compromise thermal management for a slim form factor yet packing powerful internals. As in Apple’s case, there is definitely some truth to it as MacOS works very differently with its hardware, despite being the very same components used in Windows PCs, as it requires some certification in order to work properly, which the company may have missed that certification out when it shipped the new MacBook Pros with the same macOS High Sierra version.

Let’s hope Apple ships the MacBook Pros with the update when it gets here.
