Apple has joined the Wireless Power Consortium

Rumours that the upcoming iPhone may be wireless charging-capable may now have merit as it appears that Apple has recently joined the Wireless Power Consortium.

Apple’s joining of the Wireless Power Consortium was discovered as the company has been listed down as a member of the 213-company strong consortium. For those who are unaware of what this consortium does, the Wireless Power Consortium promotes the use of a single standard for wireless charging known as Qi.

Qi isn’t exactly new to Apple as the tech has been utilise on the company’s Apple Watch, although that version of Qi has been tweaked to make sure that the Watch can only be wirelessly charged on Apple-specific wireless chargers and not with other Qi-powered wireless chargers. With Apple now part of the consortium, the company could potentially make its future devices support the standard Qi wireless charging standards. Seeing as Apple is planning big things for the iPhone this year, an iPhone that can be charged wirelessly would be a great feature to have
