Just a few days back, Apple and Google announced a partnership so that they can lend a hand in reducing the spread of COVID-19. Both companies will be using contact tracing technology so that individuals can be tracked without violating their privacy.

Starting from May, Apple and Google will be releasing “APIs that enable interoperability between Android and iOS devices using apps from public health authorities.” Apple also has a specific webpage that provides more technical information on its contact tracing specifications and framework.

Apart from that, the companies will be developing a Bluetooth-based contact tracing method that individuals can choose to join. TechCrunch provided an explanation on how it works — basically, the tracing system assigns a rotating identifier that will be transmitted to other nearby devices via Bluetooth. If you’ve been in contact with someone who has been tested positive for coronavirus, you’ll be notified. However, rest assured that this information will not be revealed to others.

Alongside the announcement, MacRumors also discovered that Apple has registered the domain name AppleCoronavirus.com. It’s safe to assume that Apple will be using this domain to share coronavirus-related information.
