Unlocking your iPhone with your face may no longer be just a pipedream as Apple has acquired Israeli-based startup called RealFace recently.
Established back in 2014, RealFace is a company that works on facial recognition technology that utilises deep learning. Much of that technology would then be used to develop biometrics systems that would allow users to login to their devices without needing to input any passwords. Thus far, the company has published an app called Pickeez that utilises the company’s own facial recognition technology to choose the user’s best photos from every social media platform they’re on.
For now, neither Apple nor RealFace have issued a statement about the supposed acquisition, and the deal that was reached by both parties remain private at the time of writing. However, financial website Calcalist believes that the deal is worth “several million dollars.” While it is unlikely that face recognition technology can be perfected in time for the upcoming iPhone, we fully expect this tech to be ready for the iPhone that comes out in 2018.
