Denuvo is a name that is infamous among the pirate scene. This particular DRM was said to be so hard to crack, a Chinese cracking group once said that Denuvo may signal the end of pirated games. This has changed over the past two days as it appears that Denuvo can be defeated after all, with pirated copies of Rise of the Tomb Raider being the first game that runs on Denuvo to be properly “cracked.”
Up until this week, crackers that work on the Denuvo DRM have mostly relied on bypasses to get around the DRM. While these games can be pirated without too much of a hassle, the fact of the matter is that Denuvo has not been cracked. Indeed, a new bypass was found just this week as a cracker by the name of Volski has managed to create a Denuvo bypass through a loophole in Steam, allowing many Denuvo-protectle titles to be played for free. Unfortunately, this bypass has since been fixed by Denuvo.
Shortly after the bypass was fixed, something big happened. Scene group CONSPIR4CY released a torrent of Rise of the Tomb Raider, with Denuvo being legitimately cracked. Since then, the torrent has ran wild on various torrent sites.
While the Rise of the Tomb Raider crack has proven that Denuvo is not infallible, you shouldn’t expect other Denuvo-protected games to be released over the next few weeks. Seeing as it took six months for RotTR to be cracked, it is possible that cracking Denuvo is just that complicated. Besides that, you can be sure that Denuvo is working hard on their end to ensure that this doesn’t happen again. In short, the arms race between pirates and DRM creators rages on.
