Nothing has officially unveiled Nothing OS 5.0, its latest major software update based on Android 17. The new release introduces more than 80 updates spanning design, personalisation, performance and AI, while retaining the company’s distinctive take on a clean Android experience.
A Fresh New Look
Nothing OS 5.0 introduces a redesigned home screen as an additional theme alongside the familiar Nothing OS design. Widgets and the search bar now incorporate transparent elements, while a new adaptive colour system takes colours from the user’s wallpaper and applies subtle tints across icons, widgets and Quick Settings.
Nothing has also refreshed the status bar, Settings, Camera and Gallery with new icons, spacing and animations. The interface now uses the Geist typeface alongside more consistent corner shapes, blur effects and iconography.
Personalisation gets an upgrade with two new lock screen clock faces called Gooey and Micrographics. Users can customise clock colours to match their wallpaper, while home screen editing now supports selecting and moving multiple apps and widgets simultaneously.
Two new widgets are also included. Collector lets users display collections of favourite objects captured through the Camera or Gallery, while Away Time tracks how long users stay away from their phone and provides weekly screen-free statistics.
Glyph Interface Gets Its Own App
Nothing is giving the Glyph Interface a dedicated app that brings its settings, sounds, ringtones and schedules together in one place.
There’s also a new Glyph Timer widget that can be started directly from the home screen, with the Glyph lights on the back of compatible Nothing phones displaying the remaining time.
Faster Performance and Smarter Memory Management
Nothing OS 5.0 promises improvements to touch responsiveness, background app retention and resource management. On-device intelligence learns which apps are frequently used and keeps them ready to launch, while overnight maintenance optimises memory to help maintain performance over time.
Bluetooth controls in Quick Settings have also been redesigned to reduce the number of steps needed to connect devices. Meanwhile, detected QR codes can now remain fixed on the Camera screen, making them easier to select without having to rescan them.
More AI Features
Essential Voice receives several improvements, including faster processing and cleaner transcriptions. The feature can better determine whether speech should be formatted as a paragraph or list, while real-time transcription displays words as users speak. Audio can also be captured directly through the Nothing Ear (3) case using SuperMic.
Essential Space now gains Smart Collections, which can automatically recommend content for collections. Support for Model Context Protocol (MCP) also allows other AI tools to search and read selected Essential Space data.
Perhaps more interesting is Essential Apps Builder, which is now available directly on Nothing phones. Users can describe the AI-powered app they want, build and deploy it without coding, and then access it directly from the home screen.
Android 17 Brings More Changes
As Nothing OS 5.0 is built on Android 17, Notifications and Quick Settings are now separated. Swiping down from the left opens notifications, while swiping from the right brings up Quick Settings.
Cross-platform Quick Share is another notable addition, allowing users to transfer files between iPhone and Android devices using a QR code without requiring an additional app.
Privacy indicators have also been improved to clearly show when apps access the camera, microphone or location. Other additions include Noto 3D emojis, expanded Dark Theme support, separate Assistant volume controls, brighter HDR viewing and a redesigned Recents interface.
Availability
The Nothing OS 5.0 Open Beta begins rolling out on 26 August 2026, starting with the Nothing Phone (3). Nothing says more eligible devices will be added to the beta programme subsequently.
