No device gets supported forever. This saying holds true to Google’s own Nexus line of smart devices as well. Last year, Google revealed that all Nexus devices will be kept up to date via monthly security patches for three years after release with major over the air updates contining to roll out for at least two years. Today, Google has officially published the End of Life (EOL) dates for some of the pre-existing Nexus devices.

As the list shows, the Nexus 9 will no longer be receiving guaranteed Android version updates after October of this year. For the current batch of Nexuses: the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P, the devices will not be receiving guaranteed Android version updates after September 2017. While these devices may not be receiving any updates to its Android version, they will continue to receive security updates for another year. In certain cases, the device may receive security patches for 18 months from when the Google Store last sold the device.

In short, Nexus devices will be supported for up to three years. Once those three years pass, Google would highly recommend that you replace your aging Nexus for a new one.
