Facebook rolls out Messenger Rooms to match Zoom’s 50 participants limit

Many companies have started using Zoom because it supports a higher limit of participants as compared to others. To counter that, Facebook has decided to introduce Messenger Rooms which will allow you to have 50 people in a single video call with no time limit.

Users will be able to create and lock/unlock a room to limit who can join the room. You can also share the room on your Facebook News Feed, Groups and Events — whoever who has the link will be able to join the room when it’s unlocked. The only catch is that the host will need to be in the room for the video call to begin.

Facebook also mentioned that this feature will be replicated in other platforms like Instagram Direct, WhatsApp and their own device, Portal. To reassure Facebook users, the company also promises that they don’t “watch or listen to your audio or video calls.”

Zoom has recently been under a lot of pressure for violating user privacy. Perhaps Facebook made the right move in trying to seize the opportunity to get users to switch between the two apps.
