If we were to name one of the most interesting gadgets we have seen in the CES 2019, this would definitely make it to the least. Planet Computers, the UK based company famous for producing a dual OS communicator device, has unveiled its latest effort at the CES showfloor.
The Cosmo Communicator isn’t exactly a successor to the Gemini, an older model that was unveiled back in MWC 2018, the company however considers it as their true flagship device.
Basically, the Cosmo looks similar to its predecessor except that it now has a external 2-inch AMOLED display that lets you do the basic stuffs without opening the clamshell, such as viewing messages, answering phone calls and checking notifications, there is also a button right below the display that lets you answer phone calls, and an external 24MP camera resides on the top.
Once you open the device, you are then greeted with a new backlit keyboard, which I’ve tried typing on the prototype device and it feels way better than its previous model.
Otherwise, the Cosmo is a much faster communicator and is powered by a Mediatek P70 processor supported by 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage, it has a 5.5-inch display with a 1080p resolution, there’s two USB-C ports that supports charging and connecting external peripherals, a 4220mAh battery powers the communicator and is good for lasting one full day.
In terms of software, the Cosmo will ship with Android 9 Pie out of the box and the company is continuing to allow you to dual boot a Linux OS of your choice, so that you can get more out of it.
Planet Computers say that the Gemini is largely popular in Japan for the Asian market, where it was sold out for several times once the device was made available, the company is also exploring opportunities to bring the device to Malaysia too.
If you are interested, the Cosmo Communicator can be yours for US$549 (RM2256) over at Indiegogo as a Show Special, it will ship on June 2019 and will retail for US$799 (RM3283) after that.
