NFC is a feature that is rarely used in Malaysia, the most we use it for is for transfer of contacts or establish a quick Bluetooth transfer. But in the future, we might see more usage of the NFC like how it is being used in the US. iPhone users can store their Studen ID or even their public transport passes. However, the biggest issue with this is when your phone has run out of battery the feature will not work. Not anymore with iOS 12.

In iOS 12 there is a feature that will keep the NFC feature running even when the battery has run out. You can use the feature for up to 5 hours after the phone is dead. This feature is not limited to the iPhone XS and XR but it will also support iPhone 8 and 7 as long as you are on iOS 12. When your iPhone is dead, it will still display a message stating that Express Cards are still available, it will provide a haptic feedback but it won’t show notifications. Sadly, this feature is not supported by Apple Pay as you will still need to give it some form of authentication which won’t work when the phone is turned off.

It is odd that this feature that was not shared during the iPhone XS launch event which is quite surprising. Again, we might not use this feature much in Malaysia but in due time, we should be seeing more NFC payment and uses.
