Over the weekend, Qualcomm announced that its Snapdragon branding will be undergoing some branding changes. Chief among said changes is the fact that lower-end platforms will no longer be a part of the Snapdragon brand. With that information in mind, Qualcomm has decided to roll out its first entry-level SoC under the “Mobile Platform” moniker that is tailor-made for the feature phone segment in emerging markets: the Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform.
With the 205 Mobile Platform, Qualcomm has outfitted the SoC with a dual-core CPU that is clocked at 1.1GHz, an Adreno 304 GPU, and support for eMMC 4.5 flash storage and LPDDR2/LPDDR3 RAM. For connectivity, the 205 Mobile Platform comes with Qualcomm’s own X5 Category 4 LTE modem, giving the SoC a theoretical download speed of 150Mbps and upload speed of 50Mbps. The platform would support Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n,, Bluetooth 4.1, Voice over LTE (VoLTE), Voice over Wi-Fi, and dual-SIM.
As the specifications may have clued you in, the 205 Mobile Platform isn’t exactly suited for smartphones. Indeed, this particular SoC is made for feature phones rather than smartphones. With this entry-level chipset, feature phones can make the jump from 2G to 4G . The 205 Mobile Platform is expected to make its debut on Q2 2017.
