MWC 2017: Sony Xperia XZ Premium crowned best new handset

As Mobile World Congress 2017 draws to a close, we have came across many new devices, but only a few of them will be remembered after the event, for instance the LG G6, Huawei P10, Blackberry KEYone, plus the likes of the Nokia 3310 which has reincarnated into a different form in the name of nostalgia. The Global Mobile Awards by GSM Association has officially named the best new handset of MWC 2017 – the Sony Xperia XZ Premium.

Sony managed to shock the rest of the manufacturers, announcing the first ever commercial smartphone to be powered by the latest Snapdragon 835 processor. By comparison, the LG G6 sports an older Snapdragon 821 chip, the same one seen in the Google Pixel handsets. The display of the Xperia XZ Premium is top notch as well – a sharp 4K Triluminos display, with Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The screen to body ratio remains unimpressive as Sony kept the huge top bezel and the bottom chin rather than to go with the flow of minimal bezels.

The attractive camera package is also part of the contribution to the Xperia XZ Premium receiving the best new handset award. Sony retained the single camera setup instead of going duo on the rear – a 19MP shooter with laser autofocus, predictive phase detection and EIS. The selfie camera is of 13 megapixels with an f/2.0 aperture.

The coveted award that Sony managed to snatch means that its flagship handset triumphed over the LG G6 and the Huawei P10, both of which happen to be impressive in their own strides as well. Do you think the Xperia XZ Premium deserves this award?
