Microsoft will be restricting Cortana for Windows 10 to Bing and Edge

Up till today, Microsoft’s personal assistant Cortana has always been able to play nice with non-Microsoft search engines and web browsers. Well, this is no longer the case as Microsoft has made it so that Cortana would only work with the company’s own Bing search engine and its Edge browser.

In a statement issued by Microsoft, the company claims that using Cortana outside of both Bing and Edge would “result in a compromised experience that is less reliable and predictable.” “The continuity of these types of task completion scenarios is disrupted if Cortana can’t depend on Bing as the search provider and Microsoft Edge as the browser. The only way we can confidently deliver this personalized, end-to-end search experience is through the integration of Cortana, Microsoft Edge and Bing – all designed to do more for you,” says Microsoft.

Suffice to say that Microsoft’s decision will probably be a controversial one as it basically forces users to deal with both Bing and Edge should they be reliant on Cortana. Personally speaking, as someone who barely uses Cortana as it is, this move by Microsoft would just put me off the feature even more.
