To wrap up today’s series of announcements, Xiaomi has one final trick up its sleeves, and it is a concept smartphone that comes with an edgeless design. Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the Mi MIX.
For its design, Xiaomi has decided to forgo the standard full-metal body that is found on many other premium smartphones. The Mi MIX will sport a full ceramic body instead, and the entirely of the phone is assembled using seamless connectors, meaning that no glue, plastics or adhesives were used during its construction.
Perhaps the biggest selling point that the Mi MIX has is its screen. The phone sports a 6.4″, 17:9 edgeless display, giving the phone an ultra-high body ration of 91.3%. The presence of this edgeless screen means that Xiaomi has to work around the omission of the standard earpiece speaker and the infrared sensor.
Xiaomi has done so by introducing a cantilever piezoelectric ceramic acoustic technology that allows you to listen to calls even without the earpiece. Likewise, the infrared sensor was replaced by a ultrasonic proximity sensor hidden behind the display.
Another component that was affected by the design of the phone is the front camera. On the Mi MIX, the front camera will be located on the bottom right corner of the phone. The Mi MIX’s front camera is stated to be 50% smaller than traditional camera modules.
Specifications-wise, the base model of the Mi MIX will come with a Snapdragon 821 processor, 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.0 storage. The Mi MIX will also have an 18k version that boasts better specs, as that variant comes with 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 256GB of UFS 2.0 storage. Both variants of the Mi MIX will sport a 4,400mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 3.0, high-definition audio quality and GPS high-precision positioning.
The rear camera on the Mi MIX is no slouch either, as the phone comes with a 16MP shooter with phase detection auto focus. Just below the camera, you’ll find the fingerprint sensor. On the 18K variant of the Mi MIX, both the rear camera and the fingerprint sensor will come with 18-karat gold rims. All variants of the Mi MIX will come with its own leather case which costs CNY299 (RM183) on its own.
If concepts are your thing, the Xiaomi Mi MIX will be available for CNY3,499 (RM2,152), while the Mi MIX 18K will retail for CNY3,999 (RM2,454).
