Xiaomi-Leica partnership: A new era of smartphone cameras

After 5 years of collaboration, Huawei and Leica ended their partnership and announced the split back May. Since then Leica has opened up possibilities of new collaborations, namely with Xiaomi, Honor, and Sharp.

According to Digital Chat Station, the German camera manufacturers have gotten one of their targets in Xiaomi, and Leica will be engineering the camera system on the Xiaomi 12 Ultra.

For the uninitiated, Leica Camera AG is known for producing optical lenses, photographic lens, binoculars, rifle scopes and microscopes. You may know them most notably from the Huawei P30 Pro, the brand’s first smartphone to boast a quad camera.

Previous reports have stated that the phone will likely sport a 200MP camera, being one of the first smartphones in the world to do so. Xiaomi has been on the upward trajectory, consistently making improvements to their products and it’ll be interesting to see how this partnership can improve on Xiaomi’s offerings in the future.

The Xiaomi 12 Ultra is estimated to arrive sometime in Q1 2022 so stay tuned as we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
