Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro Review
Xiaomi 12
Priced from RM2,899, the Xiaomi 12 is a compact flagship with a 6.28-inches OLED display that refreshes at 120Hz, it is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip and supported by 8GB RAM and up to 256GB of non-expandable storage, it comes with a aluminum and glass build that has been strengthen by Corning Gorilla Victus, which should match the same glass durability as Samsung’s S22.
Camera wise, you are getting a triple camera array with the main sensor being the popular 50MP Sony IMX766, a 13MP ultrawide and 5MP telephoto macro camera, the main camera is capable of taking videos up to 8K 24 and 4K 60 resolution, while switching to the front 32MP camera will further limit creators to 1080p 60 resolution.
With a rather respectable 4500mAh battery, the Xiaomi 12 will support its 67W TurboCharge charging that will juice up the battery in less than 45 minutes, the phone will also have an Adaptive Battery technology that prolongs battery cells when the phone is charging overnight, where it limits the current input when the phone hits 80% of battery. In other features, the phone has an IR blaster for controlling home appliances and supports up to 50W fast wireless charging with Xiaomi’s proprietary wireless charger.
Xiaomi 12 Pro
With only a 12GB+256GB storage variant, the Xiaomi 12 Pro is targeted at Pro content creators and directly challenges the iPhone 13 Pro’s photo and video capabilities, powered by the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip found on the Xiaomi 12, Xiaomi says that the chip’s power has allowed the phone’s cameras to do more computational refinements on photos and videos in low light.
Screen size is larger than the Xiaomi 12 at 6.73-inches, but Xiaomi has fitted a much better LTPO AMOLED panel that has a variable refresh rate from 1-120Hz just like Apple’s ProMotion display tech, which automatically applies the necessary refresh rate depending on the activities you do on the phone. The phone also comes equipped with Harman/Kardon tuned quad speakers with Dolby Atmos support.
The Xiaomi 12 Pro sports a triple camera array with much better camera sensors on the Xiaomi 12, they comprise a large 1/1.28″ 50MP Sony IMX707 main sensor, a 50MP telephoto lens that does 2x optical zoom and a 50MP ultrawide camera, these cameras will can take 8K 24 and 4K 60, HLG and HDR10+ videos, which Xiaomi believes mobile cinematographers will find it useful along with its advanced low light algorithm, it has even commissioned its Xiaomi Studio team in Brazil to do an impressive low light short film which was shown in the launch video.
Battery size is a mere 100mAh more than the Xiaomi 12 at 4600mAh, but its charging speed has been doubled to 120W which will juice up the phone from 0-100% in approximately 18 minutes, making it the fastest charging flagship that you can buy right now.
With these upgrades over the Xiaomi 12, the Xiaomi 12 Pro boasts a premium price tag of RM3,899, while still not beating the record of the Mi 11 Ultra’s RM4,299 debut and considerably cheaper than the iPhone 13 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra, you certainly can’t deny the fact that you are paying a lot for a ‘Pro’ Xiaomi flagship.
