Samsung files patent for a self-powered wireless charging ring

Samsung recently filed a patent to produce a new wireless charging ring that allows user to charge their phones just by wearing the ring and holding their phones.

This wireless charging ring charges through the user

The ring will be powered in two ways — user’s movement and body heat. The magnetic disc inside the ring will generate electricity via hand motions while the ring will also convert body heat into electricity.

According to PhoneArena, the generated electricity will be gathered in a tiny battery inside the ring before it charges your device. However, you’ll also need to position the ring properly so that the ring matches the wireless charging coils in your phone.

Is it practical?

We’re not going to deny that this is an innovative way to charge your phone, but there are many other factors to reconsider. For example, there has to be different ring size to fit different individuals and with different sizes, it may be hard for Samsung to fit in the batteries and magnetic disc in smaller rings. There’s also the question of how quick the ring can charge a phone and if there are any safety issues.

Either way, this is only a patent and it may not become and actual product. Still, this concept points towards more innovative charging devices in the future.
