Why would Apple want to include always-on display for future iPhones on iOS 16?

WWDC 2022 is upon us, and one of the biggest speculations apart from the new M2 chip, is that Apple would finally include always-on display on iOS 16 for future iPhones, which is a feature that the Android camp has been enjoying for more than half a decade as long as your device comes with an AMOLED display, but it is also sadly a feature that you don’t see many people using.

Why? Because it consumes so much battery power and apart from showing fancy animations and the time, it isn’t really too useful.

However, that’s not to say that Apple hasn’t dabbled with the always-on display feature on its hardware as it has included the feature on the Apple Watch Series 5 onwards, which is unfortunately still quite a battery killer although the display can refresh at 1Hz when activated, but when it comes to iPhones, it probably make sense to start including that on newer iPhones if Apple manage to resolve power consumption issues that the feature causes.

Apple is well known for perfecting features that its competitors have already worked on, while the always-on display feature might work essentially the same as Android phones, we won’t be surprised to see if Apple has tweaked it to be more useful than a mere gimmick, and if Apple could use the magic of its Apple Silicon to manage power consumption better, this is going to be one feature that future iPhone users could use.

WWDC 2022 keynote happens on June 7th at 1AM Malaysia time, which is now a physical event and will be live streamed on Apple’s website and YouTube channel.
